She was beautiful, smart and…innocent. There was no way around that. She wasn’t the type of girl you partied with, but the kind you brought home to Mom as the girl you were hoping to marry.

He looked at the shortboard and checked the price. Too much. That was his life. Everything was too expensive and sucked. He had finally met a nice girl, but he couldn’t bring her home to his parents.

His old man would be boozing and probably offer her a beer, tequila or whatever his poison of the moment was. Or maybe not, the old man wasn’t exactly known for sharing anything, especially his alcohol.

Maybe the bodyboards would be better. His was all beat up. Sort of like his mother. After years of living with his father she was beaten, worn into the ground. All the physical and mental abuse had taken its toll. Now when she wasn’t working, she was sleeping. That cycle started as soon as he had gotten big enough to hit back.

After that one time, his father hadn’t touched anyone again. Chas felt sick, remembering the feel of his fist connecting with his dad’s jaw and it shattering.

Yeah, his father hadn’t touched anyone again. But that’s when she gave up. Short of the house falling in around her she, the old lady made it clear to her children not to wake her. Especially for something she didn’t consider a good reason. He didn’t blame her, sleeping was better than being awake in their house.

Blog 1

The site I chose to do my blog posting on is DaxMusic. The targeted audience of this site is people needing audio services done in studio, from demo projects to radio jingles, and his fan base leftover from Dax’s days as the keyboardist for the group ‘N Sync. In the about page it lists not only the type of services offered but also the ‘N Sync connection and his professional affiliations from Grammy voters to being endorsed by Peavey Electronics since 1990. There are also demos, endorsements from clients and samples of past projects, including one that was nominated for a Grammy.

The site appeals to reason with the impressive affiliation and past projects list, to the emotions with audio clips of his various work and the ethical sensibilities with the professional affiliations and endorsements. In this Exercise I attempt to retell a famous fable.

The Ants and the Grasshopper
by Aesop
Original version: THE ANTS were spending a fine winter’s day drying grain collected in the summertime. A grasshopper, perishing with famine, passed by and earnestly begged for a little food. The ants inquired of him, “Why did you not treasure up food during the summer?” He replied, “I had not leisure enough. I passed the days in singing.” They then said in derision: “If you were foolish enough to sing all the summer, you must dance supperless to bed in the winter.”
The hard working and possessive ants were spending one cold winter day drying their grains they have collected. The ants worked so hard that summer they collected enough grains for two summers. Weary and famished a grasshopper stopped and asked if he could have some grains. Overcome with sympathy for the old helpless grasshopper the ants reluctantly gave her some grains but not without the following advise “next time if you wish to eat our grains you will have to help collect them or next winter you will go to bed hungry"

HTML?

10x10 is an amazing website that hourly presents a collection of 100 images neatly fitted together in a 10 by 10 grid. These images and information are taken from news sources and represent what is going on in the world during a certain hour. The unique thing about the website 10x10 is that it is automated and does not require human interaction for it to operate. This website uses flash and could be a whole new way to check the news. The website is not perfect due to the limitations of computer AI. There may be a few missing links and images. Cognitive Science can only do so much in automating a grid from eternal sources. For a more detailed information of what this website does, click here.

10x10’s core is its visual text accompanied by a few lines of verbal text. It uses visual images to best show what is happening in the world. This could be because “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Although some images are repeats of others, these images are relevant to the topic which it is trying to express. Not only does 10x10's layout display news of the current hour, but it documents and keeps past news so that one may refer back to it. This website is easy to navigate and is keeps everything simple. You are not flooded with text nor are you provided with too few. The images in the 10 by 10 grid are also numbered for navigational purposes. The numbers individually match up with a single word on the right hand side to describe what the image is about. 10x10 provides a different approach to viewing current events in the world today. Whether you chose to use it or not, the decision is yours.

The Power of Documentary Photography

At one time I was an art history major and frequently visited sites like Fifty Crows, which promotes the use of documentary photography to bring about social and political change. Across the banner menu, you may gather information through various modalities: concerned blogs written by the site’s staff, the beautifully sublime photo essays from dozens of talented photographers, and digital video of photographers discussing their works.

A short summary of the documented subjects accompanies each photographic essay as well as a list of links relevant to the topic. Sometimes the photographer decides to add a bit of textual commentary, which enriches the documentary photography even more. The site’s creators and contributors wish to bring attention to certain important issues in the world that generally go unnoticed. They maintain that images consistently inspire people to act, as demonstrated during the Vietnam War as well as shots of Ground Zero following 9/11. The digital videos featured in the hypertext link under TV/New Media are powerful because they incorporate the artist’s voice and passion about an otherwise avoided problem, such as JB Russell’s piece on depleted uranium. The rhetoric here is almost all about visual images and relies on the power of photography to move us to action. Typically the action they are expecting is a donation, membership (through a fee of $35), or the purchase of a print. Usually I’m highly skeptical of any website that asks for money, but I appreciate this one for its combination of earnestness and high drama.

The Revolution of Everyday Life

“Just in time for the holidays, we take a closer look at the inextricably bound subjects of excess and scarcity in the land of plenty.”

The site I chose to write about is ClamorMagazine.com, the digital component to the print version of a publication by the same name. Since its establishment on the Net, I have to admit that the changes to the site, although impressive, have lost some of its appeal from its original intent on promoting awareness of social issues and contributor information to a more commercial and “big business” feel.

Clamor has grown to “indi status” with its full-color cover magazine, mocking the commercial multi-million dollar venture Glamour Magazine, focusing on social issues both at home and abroad. Unfortunately, their Web site does little justice to its captivating covers of its print version or the powerful content within its pages (although some of its articles are posted online as an archive … and a tease to entice future subscribers).

The site focuses on social issues and does a good job from a journalistic perspective. Like most publication sites, this one provides a familiar layout comparative to other independent weeklies or magazines such as LA Weekly for example. Because both the magazine and the Web site utilizes a combination of visual images and textual rhetoric, audiences with visual disabilities would find it difficult to navigate the site (that also brings up an interesting metaphor: the site and magazine is for the opening of the eyes, to get a different glimpse of social issues from different perspectives).

I like the site because it offers so much to its reader base such as an interactive blog bulletin board where discussions on the issues discussed in its print counterpart are expanded to this virtual community where others can get involved and add their two cents. Clamor’s content depends on contributors from around the globe and their site provides a venue for those on the Net to get information on how to submit materials; therefore, its audience is composed of those interested in issues of “social justice” and who want to not only hear different viewpoints on these issues but also want the opportunity to voice theirs as well.

Ironically, for a publication that opposes an irresponsible “corporate America,” its site almost gives off a sense of that corporate America with its professional layout, colorful icons, and neatly packed content focused at raising money for the publication in order to continue its work.

Blog Post #2

The website I chose for this blog assignment is Sephora. The website only uses pictures and verbal words to navigate around the site. A person with visual impairments wouldn't be able to gather informstion from the site since it's based on visual aspects, but a person with a hearing impairment could gather the main message from the site because there's no audio imbedded into the website.

The visual pictures match very well with the words because they show a picture of the product along with a verbal description of what the product is. For things with color, such as lipsticks or eye shadows, they show a sample of what the color looks like next to the name of that specified color. With the website laid out this way, you can see what the color looks like as well as know what the product is called incase you wish to purchase it at the store instead of online.

The only time this doesn't work is when you get to the fragrance section. The pictures conflict with the verbal description in this aspect, especially if they're trying to sell a new perfume. You can't smell something online, so unless you bought the perfume before, you wouldn't know what type of scent you're getting. They do try to let you know if the scent is either floral or musky to help you decide.

Melvin (nba.com)

This is the website for the National Basketball Association (NBA). The verbal text is obviously geared toward the fans of the NBA, using lingo that applies to the league and the game itself. The verbal text and the semiotic dimensions of the site complement each other because it is setup in a way that combines the language of the sports community with visual images (including pictures, graphs, statistics, and videos) in a way that is appealing to the common NBA fan. The site includes news, transactions, player movement, schedules, and other information that is applicable to fans following teams and individual players. The modalities contribute to the site’s accessibility with video and audio clips of highlights and press conferences. It is not entirely accessible to people with visual or hearing impairments, but some of the audio can be useful. The size of the text can be adjusted through the browser settings, but it is not a modification enabled specifically by the nba.com website. Some key information on the website can be accessed through audio clips, but navigation to those clips can prove to be a problem for a person with a visual impairment. However the site does provide a schedule of upcoming games that are broadcasted on TV. All games include live commentary, which makes enjoying the games much easier for people with visual impairments. Another feature that is pretty useful is the NBA.com Audio League Pass, which broadcasts audio play-by-play action for every game, every night.

Adbusters Culturejammer Headquarters

The Adbusters In short, they challenge some of common ideologies set in our corporation runned society. The site and its magazine counterpart of the same title is "a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the informationage." Available on the site are links to articles, their shop, forums (for the online community), ways to get involved, videos (requiring QuickTime), and spoof ads. The main page is well organized, using images as well as text to indicate what each link leads to.

The spoof ads challenge the "image" that product is normally portrayed with. It requires its viewer to look deeper into what using the product actually means, and presents the unsaid side of what a normal advertisement of that product would say. I began visiting this site two years ago when I was a volunteer football and basketball coach in my community This Web Site dose not only talk about children in sports it also gives children advice on how to deal with the stresses of , wining, parents who place to much importance on sports, and gives kids advice on how to maintain proper health. Because there is a huge difference in the way a young athlete and an adult athlete should nourish their little bodies. This site features interactive gaming, cartons, articles, and different pages featuring their favorite’s sports athletics. These interactive games not feature today’s stars from mainstream sports like football, basketball, and baseball. I also includes extreme athletes like BMX racer Ryan Nyguist. As well as female star athletes like soccer star Mia Hamm and Professional tennis player Serena Williams. This site tries to cater to all sports and both girl and boy athletes.

This web site in not exclusively for kids, it has sections as well as links for parents encouraging them to get involved In their community, and gives tips for parents on how to keep their kids safe during sports season. Also, this site tackles an issue that has arising in the past few years, parent’s behavior at kids events. There’s advice for parents on how to keep their cool and remain calm if they don’t believe the officials made the right call, and how to cheer for your child in a positive way. Although this Site attracts kids through sports, It uses features like flash, interactive game playing, and cartoons to get much more important message out to young athletes and there parents, that is just a game. Some parents push their children to hard, and place too much emphasis on sports.

Teachers Welcome

Teach from the Web
(Uses Animated GIF/HTML)

Harry Wong is the founder of teachers.net. You might remember him as the author of two excellent books that I would recommend for any education major: The First Days of School and Emergency Teacher. Both books touch on how first year teachers are most likely to quit after just one year of teaching. Teachers are needed in every state and in every school but when these new teachers are hired they are left to fend for themselves. They do not feel welcome to the new campus, the resources are severly limited, office staff is too busy to show them around, and to top it off the children in their classes are brutal and uninterested. Teachers.net is superior because it is dedicated to keeping teachers in the classroom.

On this website there are unending lists of links to any education related question or interest you may have. For those who are soon to graduate, you can link to the public school classified ads. For any who are teaching Kindergarten, High School, Middle School, Special Ed etc., there is something for you to read and print if you'd like. For those of us who want to know what keeps a child interested and involved in his/her education there are thousands of activities and project ideas from teachers who have already tested them out and found them to be effective. I found a great idea for a middle school english class that involves Shakespeare. Instead of writing the traditional 5-paragraph essay after reading Romeo and Juliet, why not have the class get into groups and create a newspaper about the events taking place in Verona. The students could have an advice column, obituary, wedding announcement etc. Here's a free assignment that promotes group think, recommended by a teacher, and it sounds kind of fun. There is no longer a need to panic on the first days of teaching because the creation of our curriculums and lesson plans will be aided by qualified and dedicated teachers. WHEW.

I searched the site with the key phrase Wai'anae and was suprised at how much information was passed from teacher to teacher through the chatboards. Mainland teachers who were planning on moving to Hawai'i were wondering if they would be safe teaching at a school on the Wai'anae Coast. Other teachers wanted to know about certain cultural practices and how to integrate the Hawaiian culture into their math and science classes. There was a woman who had a child who was half-White and half-African-American and she wanted to know if students in Hawai'i were very prejudiced to those of mixed race. Well, each post was answered at least a dozen times. What an amazing resource. It is not often that you get intelligent personal responses from people you don't know.

The set up of the website is really funny because it reminds me of the dedicated teachers I know. They are full of information. They are full of ideas. They are organized and yet not, because of all the new information they read that they want to transfer into an existing lesson. Within the world of education there is so much information that I am amazed that this site has been able to put at least minimal organization and style to the mess of ideas. Teachers.net has more links to education related things than enyone could possible read. Also in reference to the image on the front page...of course it is an apple. Our lifetime symbol of education. How appropriate. -Carmen E.-

Kappa Sigma Fraternity

Second Blog Assignment – Kappa Sigma Fraternity

I chose to analize my fraternity’s, Kappa Sigma (KZ) main website. KZ is the largest fraternity in the nation and the one that has the most plegdes worlwide. In CONUS it is a very well known fraternity, and here on the island we just initiated that Omicron Zheta Chapter at UH. As far as the main website goes, since pretty much every chapter/colony has one, it is mainly targeted to undergrate students that want to find out more about what KZ is all about and also as an informative cyber portal for all KZ men. The website uses flash animations, color photos and graphics, easy to read text, etc. However the sensory modalities of sense of smell and hearing(audio) are not addressed.
The website is easy to navigate and it covers pretty much any type of visitor; undergraduate, alummni and parents. It also covers pretty well any questions for parents which might have a stereotype of what a fraternity might be by pointing out the fraternity’s core values and mission statement. While all these information is been display there are also rotating graphics in the banner section that shows; brothers and alummni. Aside from the home link which has the flash in the banner, the other links stay on top, and the information under each link stays in subject and not overlapping information. This way you see/read what you are looking for. I believe this website its well produced and captivating enough to where someone that is looking for a fraternity will have a good idea and will find who he would have to contact near to his location.

It's Called EPIC

This is Very Scary, This Flash was created 2 years ago, and here's the crazy part, they are accurate in what is happening, but not in the names used.

Google Grid = Google Base

This Accuracy is the first premise to the Rhetorical argument of this flash which backs up the Ethos and Logos, by making accurate predictions makes you think that this all could be real..... You create an account, then create a virtual pet that you can play with and feed, etc. There's also an entire world that you can "explore" as well as a fairly large amount of games to play that range from Puzzles to Adventure to Games of Chance. These also range in difficulty, so there are games for little kids as well as games for "adults".

This game does its best to appeal to people from all age groups. There are pets that seem to be aimed more towards boys, and some that seem to be aimed more towards girls. This is a very image and flash driven site. Some of the games have music and sounds to accompany them, and some of the games are very fun. Despite the image laden pages, the load time is pretty fast. The images are colorful and all the pets tend to be smiling in them, suggesting that playing Neopets will make you happy (sometimes it does, sometimes the games frustrate you.) The front page also has a "sign up" image that simply has the words in bold letters and a lightbulb that lights up regularly to indicate that signing up would be a "good" idea. Someone vision imparied might have problems, but this site deals more with images and flash than words. It is a site that is very easy to navigate and I confess that I spend a fair amount of time looking around. Try it, you just might like it! :)

Exotic Supercars

The website that I analyzed was www.saleen.com. Steve Saleen is basically a well known high performance car builder/former race car driver, who started his business in 1983 (background page). Four years ago, this website was a black and white flash-driven site, and today it has dramatically evolved. On the background page Saleen combines the verbal and textual information that is further supported with well selected images. This website now provides the audience with vivid multimodal techniques that are much more appealing and persuasive. The site targets an audience that ranges from Ford car goers to exotic car lovers. The style and arrangement used enables the user with easy to follow navigation, and these pages are supported with colorful images that catch your attention. Most of the pages combine both the use of eyes and ears to help the enhance the message to the audience, while other pages combine flash media, sound effects, and facts that aid in the persuasion to purchase from this website. Saleen's website also appeals to the interest of car lovers in general by keeping you up-to-date with the upcoming automotive events going on, and is further supported with hyperlinks.

Every page contains either flash media, streaming QuickTime videos, crystal clear pictures, or a combination these. When watching some of these videos and flash media you can almost smell the burning of rubber, and feel the rush of adrenaline it would produce. After a consumer carefully looks over the facts, actual testimonies, and hyperlinks, they should all be craving the cream on the crop Saleen S7. This is one car that shall definitely blow away the competition from all other exotic cars. Saleen's website also contains helpful hyperlinks to Saleen car dealers. After you fill out your location there are hyperlinks to the nearest dealers' homepage, and even hyperlinks to get exact directions to that dealer(s) through www.mapquests.com. Overall this website has an excellent combination of intrinsic and extrinsic proofs.

Roxy: Beauty and Fame Sells

The Roxy website is constructed very well. I believe that it is a great website to analyze simply because the semiotic domains are being used to maximize its modalities. Roxy.com caters to people of all ages living in all the main surfing regions throughout the world. It allows viewers to see seasonal lines before they hit stores, upcoming events, contest results, etc. The company definitely capitalizes on the "utopian surfer girl lifestyle" by using pictures of youthful females to persuade viewers into buying their products. The well known indexical Roxy symbol is dispersed throughout the site. Also, very little words are necessary on the site because the vibrant graphics speak for themselves. There are specific types of typefaces and fonts that are used to complement the cool ambiance of the website. Flash Five is also prevalent on the site. Upon arriving, viewers are instantly greeted with a picture of Roxy team rider Sofia Mulanovich, 2004 world champion female surfer. The “I” in Sofia’s name turns into the number 1, which rhetorically suggests that Roxy is number one, simply because they produce world class surfers. The site also uses music to accompany its pictures. The song that plays softly in the background whispers, “come and get it, you’re gonna love it when you get it.” The site also incorporates its team riders’ biographies which are complemented with digital videos of them surfing. The site is interactive in the sense that viewers are encouraged to ask Roxy professionals questions that they regularly respond to. Viewers are also encouraged to actively participate in the site by signing up to be acknowledged as a “Roxy Girl,” which essentially allows the recipient to feel the fame that is conjugated with the name Roxy. The website is very easy to navigate. It includes main headings that gracefully trickle down into subtopics. The hypertext enables the user to efficiently navigate through the headings and subtopics, while giving them the option to explore different areas on the site.

Visually impaired people have an advantage because they are usually not tainted by appearance to the extent that people with sight are, thus Roxy is probably not concerned in making accommodations for them. Roxy's target audience is definitely the tiny bobber surfer girl that is easily sold by hype, beauty, and fame.

Quakers in action - damn they're good.

The AFSC’s (Quaker pacifist action group) anti-Iraq war site is tight; each word is carefully chosen, each design element intricately crafted to support their rhetorical goals/strategies. Gonna have to work it into my project, I'm just scratching surface here. Rates low on the accessibility scale, since I couldn’t get any of the audio-only links to work and I'd still need to see to find them. This is pretty focused/detailed, click on the link & watch the "movie" (left side nav bar) for more context. (hmm...Tiny font excuses 3rd paragraph?)<tiny><tiny>
Wage Peace Campaign
“Not one more death. Not one more dollar.” The sentences are stacked, visually reinforcing the parallel structure and alliteration. The words become an image through font choice, bold face (as above) and their location/structure. Visually and verbally they reinforce the site’s purpose: to prompt visitors to actively support an end to US involvement in Iraq by illustrating the human and monetary cost of the war. They're appealling to American emotion and capitalism– two things we have in sometimes sickening abundance.
The "Wage Peace Movie" (Flash) uses audio, photos and limited verbal text to support the metaphor in the site’s title, “Wage Peace Campaign.” This is pacifism in military language. Both the verbal text of the title and the Flash file re-appropriate the ideas of duty and patriotism from their typical use in military propaganda, to become weapons for peace. The flash presentation works much like posters of Belgian children did in WWII. Photos fade in and out slowly, allowing lots of time for reflection. They begin with empty pairs of combat boots (each represents a US casualty), US and Iraqi gravesites and mourners, and end with a picture of a candle-light vigil. For each photo one of two women reads the name and age of one of the dead. This continues until both women are speaking simultaneously, while verbal text (lists of the names and ages of the dead) fill the window. After a pause the group’s argument is shown in clear, direct, and fascinatingly concise verbal text. Conclusion: tight.

blog 2 you

November 1, 2005
The netscape news site www.netscape.com is a web site closely associated with netscape's homepage. It is designed to offer quick news bites. Because viewers are usually just passing through, it must grab attention quickly and efficiently. Multi modality is a way to offer accommodation to a wide variety of interests. Video streaming, flash, sound files, full color graphics, and a variety of text font messages scream out. The only sensory modality not addressed is the sense of smell.
On line links, on screen financial calculators, people finders, a search engine, and photo slide shows are available. Everything in the site works together to entice you to enter and stay at this site. The site has developed from a relatively simple where-to-skate-on-O'ahu information channel (and a place to post digital video of skaters around town) to a rich source of diverse material on skating and a space for interaction and discussion for the skate community. It also serves the purpose of organizing skaters to fight for more and better skate parks on the island, and for more understanding and respect from the community at large. These functions are summed up in the inventive use of menu labels for main sections of the site (combined with humorous JavaScript rollover images that reflect the grim humor of some skaters): absorb, interact, contribute.

On the "Skatepark Progress Page" in the "absorb" section, the site combines a journalistic approach to laying out articles (including pictures of key figures like former mayor Jeremy Harris) with photographic images and architects' diagrams of existing and proposed skatepark facilities around O'ahu. Readers can not only engage in the verbal discussion of the progress of these various facilities, but they can apply their highly developed spatial literacy to evaluate the plans for the parks.
This section of 50-50.com essentially "maps" the island from the perspective of a skater. This spatial "translation" of O'ahu into a social space, demarcated and evaluated in terms of "skatability," has been feature of the site since its early days.
Its rhetoric engages the culture of skating directly, appealing the specific "ideologics" native to this particular culture, but it also addresses larger social problems that emerge from the legal and economic infrastructure of the State and municipality, such as the marginalization and criminalization of youth culture.
lightsleepers

i want to recommend the LIGHTSLEEPERS camp hawaii website. it was created by Fybes and Kavet the Catalyst (one of the illest dj's to ever bless the airwaves). kavet started the lightsleeprs show at ktuh a few years back. after he graduated, he got the boot and went on to take the lightsleepers name on to bigger and better things. he started throwing hiphop parties and eventually started his own record label. kavet created the website and it has been a staple of hawaii hiphop information on the web. the site features news and info as well as a forum for open dscussions. it appeals to ethos (character) with it's appeal to this generation of hip hop heads. many of the people involved in the scene view it as a culture and a way of life, therefore they can identify with the site. it appeals to logos (reason) with it's position in the community. the lightsleepers label has become a household name in hawaii's hip hop community. i'm not exactly sure how this site appeals to pathos (emotion).....hip hop heads take this $h*t seriously!!! just kidding. it does however have extrininsic proofs like testimony in the forum section of the site which has open and ongoing conversations.

make music not war

-m
Be part of history! No, really ...

"The greatest history book ever written, is the one hidden in our DNA."
- Spencer Wells, Geneticist

For those that are interested in learning more about the human past – where we came from, where have we traveled to, and how we got here – would definitely not want to miss out this web site by the National Geographic Society, The Genographic Project.

This project is a “five-year effort to understand the human journey—where we came from and how we got to where we live today. This unprecedented effort will map humanity's genetic journey through the ages” (NGS, The Genographic Project, 2005). Through what is called “genetic markers,” scientists can trace major events in the history of humans and trace common bonds between peoples that we may have never imagined before.

I have chosen to share this site because it is something I was never aware of before and it was interesting to me because of its interactive design. For someone that has no background or specific interest in science, this site’s design lured me into the world of genetics and I didn’t even know I was captivated for over 30 minutes, surfing the site and watching the flash videos. For anyone that is slightly curious about the human past would get drawn in by the wealth of information and imagery on this site.

What also got me curious was its appeal to logos, that all humans are connected and that we all share the same history through genetics. Throughout its message, the site delivers a message that we all have a common ancestry and that if we work together, we can “tell the ancient story of our shared human journey” (NGS, The Genographic Project, 2005). The site involves ethical (ethos) and emotional (pathos) appeals, giving viewers an “opportunity” to participate in this project; they sell a Public Participation Kit that has the tools needed to take a genetic sample to add to the project and the money ($99.95 + shipping and handling) goes towards the funding of this project. Its emotional appeal to the audience is to be part of a major project, one on a global scale and to be part of a major discovery of human history through genetics.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hitechrhet.blogspot.com/2005/09/be-part-of-history-no-really.html' title='Be part of history! In a way. I am going to "put down" a website. I will show you a website of "what you do NOT want to do" when making a website. The website I am NOT recommending is AMP's website. (Please take a look first so the rest of my explanation makes sense.)

Now why am I putting down this website? (Assuming that you review the website... ) Do you know what the website is about? If you know, how long did it took you to found out? Also if you did... let me know because I am still not sure. This page failed to answers one elementary thing... what is the website about? Needless to say that it fails to narrow down who is the target audience. After extensive research and patience I put things together and I am pretty sure that this site is either a marketing/publicity company or a commercial arts/media house. How I figured that out? The link, "How can we help" link, showcases a flash driven portfolio of some of AMP's past or active clients. The "PEOPLE" link lets you browse thru the AMP's staff, where I found several job titles that I am familiar with or that I held. Example of such are: Art Director, Creative Director, Traffic Manager, etc... Most of those titles are are use in pre-presses, printing shop, magazines companies, newspapers, advertising companies, etc... You might also see those titles in videogames development companies and software engineering companies.

Initially, I did not had anything to rely on or any confidence in whoever is transmitting the message. It was not like AMP is a known company and I thought that they where probably an audio speakers company, such as Panasonic. The website did not clearly established their expertise, so even after browsing it I was confused. The only expertise that was clear to me at the end, was that the designer of the page knew how to use Macromedia Flash software. I did not knew exactly what was the point of the site, so needless to say that any message was made valid or not. Knowledge or credibility might have been attempted at the link that showcases their work, but that link actually acts as the closest informative section. You might figure out by looking at the advertising samples that the company might do commercial or graphic arts. This site fails to influence anything except one question, which is "What is this site about?".

Phatos? Hmmm, was I persuade of anything? Let me think for a minute... NO! There is an attempt in the "About Us" link. There is a paragraph there and in summary it says that AMP company rather show you what they have done for their clients, than tell you. In doing this they are trying to convince you how they can help you to achieve your goals. The problem here is that I do not know what is the company about so how do I know if my goals pertain to their field of expertise to start with?

The Logos aspect in this website... the only logic that I could make was that they were a professional company of something. I thought that since it was flash there was something later on that would logical set me on a course of finding out what the page was about. That did not happened at all. Nothing in this page is logical to me. The "About Us" link shows a background picture that does not really have any logical relationship with the text. The "How Can We Help" link, once you clicked makes you guess that you have to go over an icon because there is no text saying what is that link about. Now the worst, is the "Home" link. You click on it and it just displays an animation of a flame. I thought that i was waiting on something to load but I was wrong.

Target Audience

I think that with enough patience you can somewhat assume that this is for clients of print-media. Clients looking for professional marketing and publicity enhancement. I still do not know what it is AMP selling or is able to provide.

I give this website a thumb down. It is technically well made for a lot of nothing. The information manager of the web design company should be fired! The person that gave the thumbs up after review the page must be thinking that all the clients are going to be psychics. I do not know how AMP thinks that this website conveys any message. Is my opinion that this page is one site is a clear example of what not to do or when flash sites go wrong!

Thomas F

Thomas Frazier
English 307
Blogger Entry # 1

The site I’m going to recommend is ESPN.com

This site appeals to sports fan of all ages and has features for everyone. But its main demographic are males between the ages of 17 and 35. Wheatear you are a serious sports fan or a casual sports fan you will find something on this site for you. With features and section for hard core fantasy sports fans and kids zone for the young preteens this site appeals to many young men. Some fantasy games and seasonal games maybe lucrative for some fans because the winner of these games can win prizes up to a hundred thousand dollars, automobiles, and tickets to major sporting events.
Unlike most sports websites which only cover major professional and college sports espn.com has a vast library to choose from. Each individual sports pages have a detailed customized menu bar. The one draw back to this site is if you don’t posses basic sports vocabulary it’s extremely easy to get lost is this massive website. This site offers so much information and links you could get lost easily
The homepage has flash with the day’s biggest story in picture. This site also has the day’s biggest sports headlines listed with links to them. Along the left hand side of the home page there’s a tool bar with a list of the most popular sports and events of the day or season. Some of the features that I enjoy most about this site is, you can personalize the site if you become a member for free you will get your own column that will feature all the local sports headlines in your area. Another feature that I enjoy is once you select a story to read it gives you the options to adjust the font size. Some of the multimedia features Espn.com offers live web casts, live video links, constant REEL updates, and countless wireless features. ESPN web site is meticulously designed with great details to both imagery and the sound.
ESPN is the leading sports network in the world and its website displays its seriousness to sports. This year ESPN.com is celebrating its 10 anniversary online.

For any old time gamers

BTW, if anyone used to play computer games way back in the day, with Windows 3.11 and DOS, here's a spiffy website to try: Abandonia. It has old games on it that are free because the companies that own them are gone and stuff. But here goes:

The website I am recommending, after a lot of random googling whatever popped into my head, is a place called "The Skeptic's Refuge." Specifically, I'm recommending their suburban myths section.

It's audience is mainly people like me who are curious about all sorts of weird things and want to know the "why" of everything.

This appeals to our logical side because it gives reasons why these things are myths. It doesn't really use the other two modes of appeal.

The American Red Cross

When I received this assignment, I immediately thought of the American Red Cross due to devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Upon arriving at the website, I was immediately drawn to the number of links that offered assistance to the hurricane victims in desperate need of food, shelter, medical assistance, and locating family members. I also noticed the countless bold headings that asked for donations. It was quite obvious that the intended audience of this website was none other than the hurricane victims themselves along with compassionate people who are in the position to donate their time and money.

At first glance I was instantly drawn to the visual images of women, children, and elderly people who are now victims and evacuees in the aftermath of the catastrophic hurricane. The visual slide show on the American Red Cross Website has the ability to evoke powerful emotions from any prospective viewer. I believe that the pictures and the explicit titles that read “Find Missing Loved Ones” are used to show the helplessness of the victims in hope of swaying viewers to donate money to the cause. It is apparent that Pathos is the American Red Cross main mode of persuasion.

One of the main attributes to this website's homepage is none other than the highly regarded, well trusted trademark sign of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is one of the most prominent features on this site and can be seen in every picture displayed on the website. In one picture there is a homeless little boy with two American Red Cross gift bags on each side of him providing him with the bear necessities he needs in order to survive. In other pictures there are volunteer doctors wearing scrubs that have the American Red Cross Symbol boldly printed on them. I propose that the symbol is displayed as a way of vouching for their integrity and reliability as a trusted none profit organization. The site also contains stories of evacuees. One boy vouches for their credibility by saying “The Red Cross is giving us a home, food and clothes, I feel I have to do my part to help the Red Cross and I feel good helping.” These pictures and stories allows the company to enhance their credibility and trustworthiness, therefore they are using Ethos as a secondary form of persuasion.

The American Red Cross gives viewers many logical reasons to donate, utilizing the Logos as a mode of persuasion. The articles and pictures have valid reasons and support to convince viewers that it is only logical to help children get back to school and elderly people into homes. Also, there is a bold link on the homepage that is titled “Facts at a Glance,” here viewers are given statistical data on the American Red Cross humanitarian relief efforts geared toward Katrina Victims. The message to help is made very clear in many ways.

Don't click it?

I would like to recommend this website to the class. I feel this website is really interesting and I believe it uses intensive flash to display the visuals. The really amazing thing about this site is that it is against the common "clicking" of your mouse to move around on the website. You will actually be warned when you click on anything!

I believe this website appeals to computer users that use computers on a regularly basis. Also this website would appeal to people that are interested in changes in the technological revolution. The reason I believe this is because of the way the website displays explains that the creator questioned existing habits of interface development and decided to take it to another level.

This website strongly appeals to logos. When using this website, you are pratically going out of your normal computer using interface where nearly everything is controlled by you clicking on links, pictures and objects. Meanwhile, this website argues that there are ways to navigate on a website without clicking.

Dontclickit appeals to pathos in the way it requires you not to click on anything at all. The website will even try to trick you to click on pictures at times. The result will be a warning reminding you that clicking is deeply rooted in you and perhaps a habit created over time. While navagating through this website, you will strive to not click on anything. This will appeal to your emotions, making you fustrated, interested, annoyed, or fascinated. Emotions will vary depending on the person.

Dontclickit appeals to ethos by showing that although clicking is not wrong, it has almost completely taken over computer interfaces these days. This website is shows ways of changing how a person interacts with website interfaces.

Check this website out if you have time.

Education or Propaganda? (Abridged Version)

Thanks for the chance to edit,
Anyone interested in the Akaka Bill, Hawaiian sovereignty or colonialism in the Pacific should research the truth about Hawaii's status within the U.S. BEFORE checking out this site hawaiimatters.com . I don't agree with the site's views, but it's rhetorically interesting.

Hawaii Matters is the site of Thurston Twigg-Smith, grandson of Lorrin Thurston one of the leaders of the Bayonet Constitution and eventually the Overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani. Mr. Twigg-Smith supports his grandfather's actions completely, and is behind several organizations intent on maintaining the status quo here. His target is anyone interested in Hawaii's history, the Akaka Bill, and the issues surrounding the questions of sovereignty and Native Hawaiian rights. He specifically appeals to non-Native Hawaiians who claim Hawaii as home, and to anyone of voting age in Hawaii.

This site siezes upon the lack of general education on the history of Hawaii with a slight appeal to logos. I say slight because, while there aren't a lot of empirical facts, there are links to court cases and summaries of judgements which support his position. Twigg-Smith's book, Do the Facts Matter, is also available on the site for free, but I don't know how reliable his "facts" are. The site claims to offer a "wide range of views" on sovereignty, and to "seriously and objectively study the sovereignty question in Hawaii." However, I have yet to find a view which is contrary to Mr. Twigg-Smith's position.

The use of the term "objectively" is perhaps an ethical appeal, or maybe it just sets up the visitor to believe the other appeals to ethos, which are based on the American commonplaces about racial equality and civil liberties. (see "Protecting Discrimination by Inventing a Tribe" on the "Views" link) The argument is that restoring land or rights to Native Hawaiians is unconstitutional, because it discriminates against those who claim Hawaii as home and who are not Native Hawaiians. There is an appeal to pathos in the intro to Twigg-Smith's book, in which we find that Twigg-Smith was asked by two local children why his grandfather stole the land from Hawaiians. His intent is to gain our sympathy for this "undeserved" reputation, and to channel our outrage that these poor children have been raised to believe what he considers to be a lie.

It frustrates me that the site claims to offer to educate and link visitors to all views, when it really doesn't. Perhaps I'm being too platonic in my evaluation; seeking the elusive truth rather than evaluating the argument.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hitechrhet.blogspot.com/2005/09/education-or-propaganda-abridged.html' title='Education or Propaganda? This website is a blogging community that's geared more towards diary keeping than a blog, such as this one we use for our class. Their slogan is "Read life, write life." and that statement sums up what their goal is. They want people to read about other people's writing about their daily lives and write about their own for others to read. Their target audience is a wide range of people, all over the world, who actively use the internet on a daily basis. This is shown through section on the website that lets you search for diarists according to their geographic location. The age range of their target audience start from young teens to people over 60 years old. This is shown through a different section on the website where you can search for diarists based on their age range.

The site was started in 1998 and was around before other "journaling sites" such as LiveJournal or Xanga. It was, and still is, a free service, where you can sign up for a diary of your own. A few years after 1998, the founder decided that if you wanted to upgrade to a "Plus" diary, you can do so for $24 a year and in exchange for that, you receive no pop-up or banner ads.

The site mainly has an appeal to emotion (pathos). It's like a regular paper diary, where you write to let out all your emotions, execpt it's online for others to read. You can read about someone's fight with cancer, breakup of a marriage, or just daily tasks. Also, if you sign up for a diary and find another person's diary that you enjoy reading, you can add them to your favorite list. By reading their diary when they update and through exchanging comments/notes (which you can do), you build a friendship of sorts because you feel like you know them personally through reading what they write about their personal life.

It also appeals to ethics (ethos) because even though it's an "open" diary, there are still a set of rules that you have to follow. As an example, you aren't allowed to leave rude or demeaning notes on other's diary. Another example is that you're not allowed to post nude pictures due to the fact that there are teens who are under the age of 18 that are on the site. Another way that it appeals to ethics is that there's a special diary made called "OD Cares" and it basically lets the entire diary community know about different public organizations that need support. As an example, Multiple Sclerosis is featured in one entry.

The appeal to logic (logos) is that it's more logical than a paper diary because others can read your online diary and if you need advise or encouragement, people will help you. If you have a feeling of wanting to be accepted, people will welcome you into their hearts and their lives.

It's funny how emotionally close you can get to people who you may never meet in your entire life.

Pixie

The ONE Declaration

I'm sure you all have seen the commercial: Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Cameron Diaz, Ellen DeGeneres, Mos Def (my personal favorite) and a slew of other white-clad celebrities frowning intently into the camera, each speaking a word, or two. "We not asking for your money, we're asking for your voice." That's how the commercial so ambiguously ends. So I visited the site, www.one.org, in order to understand what these movie stars were getting so worked up about--again.

Seems to be a worthy cause. If the United States, in conjunction with a few other "wealthy" nations put aside one percent of their budget per year, worldwide poverty could be wiped out completely within a dozen or so years. Extrinsic proofs are littered throughout the website, emphasizing the idea that this is a responsible and concerned group of organizers who are genuinely interested in saving the world. The site gains the viewer's confidence through the ethos of its argument, much like the Ethos water site we visited earlier. But this "campaign" has something much greater going for them: they have Hollywood. When you see a pained Tom Hanks thisclose on your TV, a kind of pathos is at work here--a respected actor, an honorable cause, a real feeling of sympathy and hope. While logos is probably swimming around the site in many places, the moral and sentimental tools are working far harder.

For example, you are asked, as a citizen of humanity, to sign "the ONE Declaration," in which "WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all." I wish there was an exclamation point at the end of that. Next step: buy the ONE wristband. Yes, the same one that was spotted on Lindsay Lohan's arm last week on the red carpet. The page advertising these bands ($10 for 10) asserts that they are all over the pages of People and US Weekly. Ugh. Totally ruins the entire campaign for me. It's obvious here that the website--ergo the whole operation--is targeted at the celebrity-obsessed, fad-crazed, trend-slaves that our country is famous for.

Two things pop in my head: one, maybe it's a good thing to get these otherwise oblivious souls to pay attention to world affairs and two, our country is in a sad state. Bottom line: I didn't sign the ONE Declaration. But I won't judge you if you do.

The Food Network

I found myself going to http://www.foodnetwork.com (it can also be found at http://www.foodtv.com, http://www.foodtelevision.com, and http://www.food.com) after watching "30 Minute Meals" on the FoodNetwork station in hopes of finding a recipe for one of the dishes I just saw Rachel Ray concoct. This web site is targeting the FoodNetwork viewers who are either the stereotypical homemaker or people who just like to watch the FoodNetwork for cooking pointers (like me or even some of my male friends). This site is much more accessible to people who may not know its exact address because it has at least four different urls.

Site viewers are able to easily navigate around this web site by clicking on one of the tabs at the top of the screen that rise up as the mouse is moved over it. The logical (logos) aspect of this site is that the "FoodNetwork people" know that the popularity of the shows hosts attract viewers who are interested in knowing (pathos I think) how to cook like their favorite chef. The TV show viewers who are more than likely interested in finding good recipies of their favorite host to try out, can also get kitchen design tips, party ideas, and even program show times at this web site. They can also do some online shopping for: kitchen equipment that's similar to ones that their favorite chef may use, cookbooks, apparel, episode DVDs, etc.

On an ethical level, the website also contains recipes for a healthier diet, whether they be for low calorie, low cholesterol, low carb, low fat, or vegetarian, this site is the place to find them. There are also different advertisements that appear - for people who have acid reflux disease, there's a Nexium ad, and for people who feel the need to donate money to the Red Cross relief fund, there's a link for that also. (As well as others when the page is refreshed.)

All in all, I'd recommend this page to anyone who likes to cook or who just wants to try something new in their cooking style. (Rachel Ray's recipes are fast and for the most part pretty simple!) Just don't get sucked into buying expensive kitchen gear!

Hawaiian Society of Law and Politics (HSLP)

http://www2.hawaii.edu/~hslp

I highly recommend the HSLP website to anyone who is interested in International Law (any Jurists or Theorists?) and Hawaiian issues (political, cultural and historical). If Hawaiian history didn't make sense in high school or college this site can help. It provides original source documentation and proper theory to give you a better context of Hawaii.

Things of note is this RIO was founded by many PhD candidates and graduate students, The Hawaiian Journal of Law and Politics, and the International Law Symposium held at the East West Center on April 16th 2005.

The sites primary appeal would be to Logos, with most resources on the site being of municipal Laws and intercourse between States (note the upper case s) in the form of treaties and letters between the Heads of State, requiring knowledge of International Law and International Relations theory to really appreciate, let’s just say it’s an acquired taste.

The ethical and pathetic appeal of the site is gained only when you understand the content, over some 200 pages. Letters by Queen Liliuokalani and the Hawaiian Patriotic League are eloquently written. Yet the site itself is not an Ethical nor pathetic appeal of the Hawaiian people, but the content can easily move someone when realizing the context of the historical situation.

Ebay

After many years of being in business Ebay has grown into a world known multibillion dollar business. The audience of this site targets people that are 18 years of age and older who are legal to buy and sell items. Although there is an age requirement to purchase items, there is practically every kind of item for all ages and ethnicities. The types of items you may find here are practically as wide a range one can think of. If a person was to fully use all the resources of this website they wouldnt really need to leave their homes. By having age requirements and security procedures this helps aid in making their website a much more sucessful environment.

What interested me about this website was the amazing deals that I could find. This website offered me prices that I would never be able to find locally. Due to the fact that there are many sellers for the same type of item causes competition that would force people to bring prices down cheaper than a local store. When shopping for one particular item it is like walking into an Ala Moana with all the stores selling that item. Another reason why I liked this website was how I could find rare products that wouldn't be found anywhere around town. On top of that, if I wasn't able or willing to afford brand new products I still could get really cheap used products. As for selling this website allowed me to get rid of things that were no use to me and just took up space around the house. ("one man's junk is another man's treasure")

This website contains a good amount of ethics (ethos) because if it wasn't a reputable website it wouldn't have grown so large worldwide. Another reson why it is safe is how they have seller and buyer money back guarantee. This means that if you the buyer/seller wasn't fully happy with the transaction due to fraudulent reasons you can file a claim with them and be entitled to money back. On top of this they have a transaction company called PayPal . This company also provides a money back policy to help better ensure your safe transactions. On top of this you can use your credit card that would allow you to stop payment by a simple call to the credit card company for fraudulent reasons. By having more than one security protected pathway toward a transation people are able to have sucessful outcomes. Other secondary security measures they have are their toolbar that warns users if you are going to a spoofed website to better ensure your password is your password only. Along with this each user has a feedback forum that you may view to help you decide if the seller/buyer is a reputable person.

For the reason (logos) why to buy and sell at Ebay is a simple answer of why waste your precious time to go to many different places to buy or sell items? On top of that why would any one want to spend more for products that can be bought for cheaper? Even more so with the high gas prices doing shopping online at a place like this looks even better every minute. Other reasons why one would want to business here is how they have good intentions as they always make contributions/fundraisers for non-profit organizations. There are even other website stores that sell items here making it easier to shop because it is like an online Ala Moana and more. If a website can save you time, money, and gas all in the comfort of your own home woudn't that make it a great reason to go here.

Finally for the appeal (pathos) of this website is very attractive and easy to use. When I first started using the computer I was told about this website and with the first look at the site I could find my way around to purchase items. From the main page you can clearly see all the links to the different catagories of products. If this doesn't help enough there is even a big search bar above all of that allows you to type in the key words of the items you would like to search. Also at the bottom of the main page you can click on all the different countries to show you the views in a particular language and setup. As for the items for sale the pathos depends on how the seller makes it, therefore it can be the best or worst appearance. As for the main pages of all catagories including the homepage they all show colorful pictures of the most popular items searched and sold, making it the highest appeal it can be because it is going for what the majority wants. It seems their goal is to achieve the highest of all intrinsic proofs to aim for the number one transaction website.

The Lotus Eater

http://www.thelotuseater.com

It is a rarity on the internet to encounter a very good Flash-driven interface. You would think it would be easier, because if you go to the bookstore you can browse tomes and tomes dedicated to this stuff. Yet a lot of the Flash interfaces and animations tend to be too garish and leave something to be desired. In my lifetime, and though I do not actively browse the internet for such things, I've encountered maybe a couple commercially produced Flash works that actually are worthy of the medium.

This website, and although it isn't obvious from the outset, is a gallery of a kind of deviant art. I'm sure it was inspired by some other famous artist, but I don't follow art so don't ask me. I believe that a simple design has its perks, and this page is as simple as it gets. One would not know by just looking at it, but it probably involved a lot of work to actually program and put it together.

A quick overview: You select the categories, which are represented as roses that "pop" when you click on them. A dangling string of beads usually appears on the left-hand side, and clicking on these shifts from page to page. Note that these "pages" are confined into one window, which is positioned right in the middle of your screen. Excellent design because even on a smaller resolution, the entire interface is visible without the presence of the scrollbars which means that you have to shift your focus. Your attention is always on the middle of the screen, there is very little transitional movement, and the middle screen slowly expands if the image being presented is slightly larger than its frame. Another nifty addition to the page is a ladybug that intially creeps down from the upper-left corner of the page. Moving your mouse over it stops the bug from moving, as if you were pressing your finger down on it.

One of the problems with the website is that the font is small, and for those of you running a 1600x1200 resolution on your 21-inch LCD screen (which is the only kind of screen that merits such a high native resolution), will probably find the words hard to read. There are very few actual words, but they are there.

Despite the fact that the site is entirely black and white, its simplicity combined with a repeating, but not grating, background score, captures your attention. When the loading finishes and the interface does come into being, it does not take long for one to familiarize oneself with the controls. And these are all the key points in web-design, ease of use, size, loading time (which is very quick, even on a slower connection), and being able to navigate from any page from any page.

Given that it is an online gallery, it probably appeals mostly to pathos. There is little, if any, appeal to logos or ethos, because it merely serves as the artist's modus for his/her expression. Most sites like these are portfolios, showcasing the artist's work; it saves them the hassle of having to mail examples to companies seeking creative talent. The site is pretty laid back, and the artist's work is simple in its nature, like the site that showcases it. I wouldn't even confine it to a kind of rhetoric, its persuasion is entirely passive in nature. Like most kinds of art, it just exists, and it's really up to the individual to forge some unique meaning out of that existence.

siriusmusic

As a musician, poet, composer, songwriter, arranger, singer, producer, performer, guitarist, synthesist, and recording engineer, I'm always looking for gear. I like this website. My two kids and I go to it all the time. It is perfect for the intended audience...you know, kids who still haven't gotten the alphabet down or who like to color pictures without using actual crayons. There are also parent links to printing materials and other links to teaching tools we all can use to help our Littles grow old. You can choose where to go either by clicking on a character or TV show title. Nothing is too complicated for the average 3-year-old.

Thank you to whoever posted that website davesite.com because I found out what I was doing wrong and was able to post this right when I was on the verge of quitting. (This must be how kids feel when they have trouble reading). This site appeals specifically to a child's sense of Logos. Our quest for knowledge begins after our first breath out in the open air...PBS kids uses media to help all ages learn through different modes. Through picture, music, repetition and games, each child will find something educational to do.

I recommend PBS to anyone who knows a kid. There's familiar characters who will read/play with you at the touch of a button. Whether you are a Sesame Street, Clifford the Big Red Dog, or Reading Between the Lions fan, you'll learn something. You really will. Songs are good, you almost can't get lost, even the games are good. Don't take my word for it. :-)
-Carmen Enriquez-

Example of Blog Post 1

I'd like to recommend the Web Standards Project (WaSP) web site to everyone in the class. The WaSP group aims its site at a range of people who produce content for the World Wide Web, including high-end web developers and people who are just learning how to publish on the Web (like many of us). The "Recent Buzz" section on the home page is blog on which members post ideas and reports about current practices in web design. These posts include a number of critiques of existing sites that don't comply with standards.

What's striking to me about the rhetoric of the page is that WaSP characterizes its efforts as a "fight":

Founded in 1998, The Web Standards Project (WaSP) fights for standards that reduce the cost and complexity of development while increasing the accessibility and long-term viability of any site published on the Web.

While for the most part a page like this appeals to logos, advancing the rational argument that compliance with web standards is objectively better than non-compliance, WaSP's account of its "fight" involves ethical (ethos) and even emotional (pathos) appeals. WaSP argues that people with disabilities are better able to access information on sites that comply with web standards. This is an ethical appeal--the WaSP group is advocating consideration for the disabled. If you read through the "About" section of the site, you'll detect (at least I do) a kind of outrage at the general disregard for standards. The implicit message is, "we're angry about the lack of standards, and we're going into battle to defend them." This anger is part of an emotional appeal--we're expected to be angry, too.

I hope this helps give an example of the kind of thing I'm looking for in your own posts. I'm glad that folks have some HTML and other scripting background--and that they're willing to share it. "CSS" means "Cascading Style Sheets": it's a way of controlling the appearance (and some behavior) of a web site.
